The Clumsy Lovers

To dance like a fish, straight up and down in short little jumps doesn't really sound like too much fun at first. Then the music works its magic on the crowd and the entire audience starts flying through the air in wild abandon. Rhythmic patterns far to fast to dance to in normal fashion kept the audience jumping, literally. The five piece performed magically through the entire night with slyly interwoven original songs and covers of songs by the likes of AC/DC and Bob Marley. The fish dance is now a favorite of many fans of the well-known Vancouver B.C. band called the Clumsy Lovers.

Well into the bands seventh year of touring, the Clumsy Lovers are returning to Oregon next month for a couple of must see shows. The amazing fiddle performance of Andrea Jonat in itself is worth the admission price. Watching her literally saw through two fiddle bows in one night, this classically trained musician would make the most discerning fan smile. With Brad Guillard on banjo and vocals, Devin Rice on drums, Christopher Jonat playing bass and vocals, and Trevor, the one named man playing guitar, this strangely eclectic act is nothing short of awesome. The interesting arrangement of instruments really works well for the band as well, with no one member stepping on the others toes.

The Clumsy Lovers music integrates celtic rock, punk, and bluegrass into their self-described style called "Raging Celtic Bluegrass Rock", which is bizarre, but amazingly accurate. From pulsating grooves to the jumping "fish dance" punk-grass type, the band covers a lot of territory, holding the set together with pure, unabated energy. Slight resemblances to the Young Dubliners and the Pogues can be heard in the songs, but they are really a good new mix of original music.

With the release of the bands new live album, "Still Clumsy After All These Years", they are beginning a brand new tour that will include many new venues never before visited around the northwest and further east. This is possibly the last opportunity to catch this band before they become more expensive to see, as they are getting more and more nationwide notoriety. In fact, the Clumsy Lovers have been issued a grant by the Canadian government for their touring efforts.
